Visas & Entry to Hungary

Hungary is a member of the Schengen Area, meaning entry requirements are aligned with EU-wide rules. Visitors from many countries — including US citizens — can enter without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

ETIAS — New Requirement from Late 2026

The EU has introduced ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), a pre-travel authorization required for visa-exempt nationals, including US citizens. ETIAS is an online application, valid for three years - an electronic identity verification before you travel. More information is available on the official ETIAS website.

If You Need a Visa

Citizens of countries without a visa-waiver agreement with the EU must apply for a Schengen visa before traveling. All visa applications for Hungary in this representation's jurisdiction are handled by the Embassy of Hungary, Washington, DC.

Note: Travelers that require a Schengen visa must obtain it from the country they intend to visit, i.e. will spend the most time during their stay in the EU. For more information, please visit the EU website for Schengen visas.

Travel from Hungary to the USA

Entry requirements for travel to the United States are set by the U.S. Government, not Hungary. Please contact the U.S. Embassy in Budapest for authoritative information on ESTA, U.S. visas, and entry rules.
