Getting to and around Hungary is straightforward, and the country's compact size means most major attractions are within a few hours of each other.
Getting There
- By air: Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (BUD) is served by major carriers including direct transatlantic routes and a wide range of European budget airlines
- By rail: Budapest is well connected by train to Vienna (2.5 hrs), Bratislava (1 hr), Prague, and other European capitals
- By road: Hungary has an extensive motorway network; Vienna is approximately 3 hours by car
- By river: Danube river cruises include Budapest as a highlight port of call
Visas & Entry
Hungary is part of the Schengen Area. Citizens of many countries can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Starting 2026, visa-exempt tourists will need to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization before travel. Please visit the EU website for Schengen visas for details.
Getting Around
Budapest has an excellent metro, tram, and bus network. For the rest of the country, intercity trains and buses are reliable and affordable. Car rental is available at the airport and in major cities.
